You can forget about a low cal diet on your archery hunt!

One of the most important things while hunting is nutrients and making

sure you are getting enough calories. The day-to-day calories I take in at home being a stay-at-home mom and student are not even close to cutting what I need hiking and spike camping. I do like to make some freezer meals and pop them in the cooler. The other useful snacks I take are meat and cheese, cut up fruit, jerky, protein bars, and trail mix.

But what about spike camping? How about if you get caught in a rainstorm, which we were very close to doing. We got some meals that had around 200 calories each, thought maybe we could double up or use them for snacks. That was not exactly reasonable with all the calories we were burning with our 5-15 mile a day hikes and hillside climbs. Peak meals were without a doubt the perfect option for us. each serving is 250-600 calories making the whole package around 500-1200 calories. Use the Jetboil to heat up just the right amount of water and BOOM great tasting, calorie dense, and easy meal. I got the Basecamp set of Peak Refuel meals. Included are 12 meals, which is 24 servings. We ate, on most of the high calorie burn days, a whole package each 1-2 times a day depending. Eating jerky and cliff bars for lunch usually.

Another thing I wanted to add to this is that we added lots of electrolytes into our hunting regimen. Gatorade G2 was my go-to as well as MTN OPS electrolyte packets and Liquid IV packets. In the Nevada desert, water sources are few and far between. The 2L water backpack and electrolytes were another essential, and honestly the most essential. We did happen to have a nice creek running through our spike camp, we were lucky enough to be able to gather water. We had our handy dandy LifeStraws for hikes where we ran out of water on hand and LifeStraw Flex with gravity bag for when we were in our spike camp.
